- Can be designed to be either fixed to a wall with one outer string , fixed between walls or free standing .
- Majority have one wall string and one outer string .
- Wall string is fixed directly to the wall along its entire length or is fixed to timber battens plugged to the wall .
- Top of the wall string being cut and hookled overt the trimming member of the stairwell .
- Outer string is supported at both ends by a newel post .
- Bottom newel rest on the floor , and upper newel , it is notched over and fixed to the stairwell trimming member .
- Newel posts also serve as the termination point for handrails which span between them and is then infilled with balusters .
