Fixing of strings

  • Can be designed to be either fixed to a wall with one outer string , fixed between walls or free standing . 
  • Majority have one wall string and one outer string . 
  • Wall string is fixed directly to the wall along its entire length or is fixed to timber battens plugged to the wall . 
  • Top of the wall string being cut and hookled overt the trimming member of the stairwell . 
  • Outer string is supported at both ends by a newel post . 
  • Bottom newel rest on the floor , and upper newel , it is notched over and fixed to the stairwell trimming member . 
  • Newel posts also serve as the termination point for handrails which span between them and is then infilled with balusters . 
  • Outer string supported by newel posts .
