Timber jointing is the fastening of 2 or more pieces of timber using either:
- Mechanical fasteners such as nails , bolts , connectors or
- Structural glue .
Besides this , there are other types of joints such as mortice & tenon , tongue & groove , dowel & dovetail for making doors , windows & furniture . But these are not structural joints & will not be considered in detail in our lesson .
- The jointing of timber members play a very important role in the construction of a timber structure such as a building , a tower or a bridge .
- All timber structures are made up of members that must be connected for the transfer of loads between them .
- Timber joints have often been the weak link in timber construction .
