Cavitation

  • The degree of smoothness of the surface & the quality of the surface in terms of abrasion resistance play an important role as well as the actual velocity of the water .
  • No surface is absolutely smooth ( even steel ) & if the velocity of flow exceeds about 15m/sec , there is a definite possibility that cavitation will form at discontinuities on the surface & this will result in cavitation damage .
  • Generally , cavitation damage has been found to occur to spillways , penstocks , aprons  , energy dissipating basins & to syphons & tunnels in hydroelectric schemes .
