Chemical Attack on Concrete

  • Concrete usually contains cement , & severe expansion & loss of strength can occur if soluble sulphates react with the tricalcium aluminate component in ordinary Portland cement if attacked by sulphates .
  • Chloride is also a problem in reinforced concrete as it encourages the rusting of steel reinforcement which swells & fractures the concrete.
