- Deterioration of concrete mainly arises from two causes :
- Physical damage caused by impact , abrasion , freeze-thaw ( frost ) , thermal shock , high - velocity water , the cracking & spalling of concrete caused by the rusting of rebars .
- Chemical attack , mainly on the cement paste , by external aggressive chemical compounds .
